Fly into Bangor (BGR) + Drive to MDI

Pick up rental car at Bangor International Airport. Drive south on US-1A and ME-3 — ~1 hr 10 min. Cross the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. Check into lodging by ~2:00 PM.

Afternoon — 3:30 PM

Bar Island Trail Easy 2.0 mi RT Kid Favorite

Walk across the ocean floor to Bar Island at low tide! The land bridge is only accessible ~3 hours around low tide — check NOAA tide charts. If tides don't align today, swap to Day 3.

Ice cream at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream, souvenir shops, waterfront park.

Dinner: Geddy's

Pick your own lobster from the live tank. Wood-fired pizza and burgers for the 10-year-old. Waterfront deck with harbor views.

0.75-mile waterfront path behind the Bar Harbor Inn. Golden hour over Frenchman Bay.

Day 2 — Wednesday, July 22 Ocean Path + Sea Kayaking + Jordan Pond

Sand Beach → Thunder Hole → Otter Cliffs → Jordan Pond — all along Park Loop Road Open in Google Maps →
Morning — 7:30 AM

Sea Kayak Tour Moderate 2.5–3 hrs Ages 10+

Paddle along MDI's coast through sea caves and past seal colonies and seabird nesting islands. Dress in layers — cool on the water even in July.

Late Morning — 11:00 AM

Ocean Path Easy 4.4 mi RT

Sand Beach past Thunder Hole → Monument Cove → Otter Cliffs. Mostly flat, stunning coastal scenery. Time Thunder Hole for ~2 hours before high tide.

🍴 Lunch: Jordan Pond House

Since 1893. Popovers with butter and jam on the lawn, overlooking Jordan Pond and The Bubbles. Also lobster stew, sandwiches, salads. Reservation via OpenTable.

Full loop around Jordan Pond with iconic views of The Bubbles. Beautiful, shaded, family-friendly.

Eat on a dock over the water in Bernard (~25 min drive). Classic boiled lobster dinner with corn and drawn butter. Less touristy — a local favorite.

Rain backup: Swap kayaking to a clear day. Visit Acadia Nature Center and start Junior Ranger program (free at Hulls Cove Visitor Center).

Day 3 — Thursday, July 23 Summit Hikes + Carriage Roads + Fine Dining

Gorham Mountain Trail Moderate 1.8 mi RT

Panoramic views of Sand Beach, Beehive, Cadillac Mountain, and the ocean. Wild blueberries in July! Best family-friendly summit hike. ~1.5 hours.

South Bubble & Bubble Rock Moderate 1.6 mi RT

Famous glacial erratic — massive boulder balanced on a cliff edge. Most Instagrammable photo op in the park. Supervise the kid near the edge. ~1–1.5 hours.

Afternoon — 1:00 PM

🚲 Bike the Carriage Roads Easy 6 mi (Eagle Lake Loop) Great for Kids

Car-free crushed-gravel roads built by Rockefeller Jr. Eagle Lake Loop is shaded, flat, scenic. E-bike rentals available. Pick up bikes at Acadia Bike. 2–2.5 hours.

Day 4 — Friday, July 24 Cadillac Sunrise + Tide Pools + Lobster Boat

🌅 Sunrise from Cadillac Mountain Easy 0.5 mi paved

1,530 ft — highest point on the North Atlantic coast. 360° views from the paved summit loop. Bring warm layers (50°F and windy!) and a thermos. Requires vehicle reservation from Recreation.gov.

⚠ Fog check: If fog is predicted, skip and sleep in. Drive up at 5 PM for golden hour instead.

🦐 Tide Pooling at Ship Harbor Easy 1.3 mi loop Kid Favorite

Figure-eight trail ending at tide pools (time for low tide). Sea urchins, crabs, periwinkles, sea stars, anemones. Bring water shoes. Southwest Harbor side.

🚢 Lobster Boat & Seal Tour — 1:00 PM

Watch lobstermen haul traps, see sea creatures, visit a seal colony. ~1.5–2 hours. More kid-friendly than full whale watch.

🏊 Swimming at Echo Lake Beach — 3:30 PM Easy Lifeguards

Freshwater lake, much warmer than the ocean. Lifeguards, easy entry, great for kids. West side of MDI, ~20 min from Bar Harbor.

Farewell Dinner: Galyn's

Waterfront in Bar Harbor. Crab cakes, scallops, fresh fish. End with ice cream at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream.

Rain backup: Replace tide pooling with the Oceanarium (lobster hatchery, touch tank), then a ranger talk at the visitor center.

Day 5 — Saturday, July 25 Departure Day

Morning — 7:45 AM

Wonderland Trail — Farewell Hike Easy 1.4 mi RT

Easy out-and-back to a rocky beach. Quiet, beautiful, rarely crowded early morning. A gentle farewell.

9:15 AM — Last Stop

MDI Ice Cream or coffee in Bar Harbor. Depart for Bangor Airport (~1 hr 10 min). Return car. Fly home.

If flight is late: Drive Park Loop Road (27 miles, ~3 hrs with stops) or finish Junior Ranger badge.
